إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا عَرَبِيًّا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ

"Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'an that you might understand." [Surah yusuf]

For Muslims, the most honourable book (Qur’an) was revealed to the most honourable Prophet and Messenger (Mohammed ﷺ). It was delivered by the most honourable Angel (Jibril) in the most honourable land on earth (Makkah). Its revelation began in the most honourable month of the year (Ramadan). It was also revealed in the most honourable of languages (Arabic). Therefore, the Qur’an is perfect in every respect, and knowledge of Arabic is indispensable.

خَيْرُكُمْ مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ وَعَلَّمَهُ

"The best amongst you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it" [bukhari]

To be amongst the best of people, we are encouraged to learn the Qur’an and teach it. This doesn’t just mean the recitation of the book (Tajweed), or the memorisation of it (Hifdh) but also to learn the meaning and understanding of it (Fahm). The Arabic Language is the vehicle through which we understand the Qur’an, therefore, it is very difficult to have a deep connection with the Qur’an, our manual of guidance for life, without Arabic.

There are many sciences to be studied for the acquisition of the Arabic language and we indebted to our earlier scholars who preserved them for us to embark on a journey to understand the Qur’an, Prophetic traditions and the vast plethora of Islamic literature.

THE MOST HONOURABLE MONTH.png

The Arabic Unlocked Programme presents a comprehensive foundation for beginner students of written and spoken Classical & Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). Expertly constructed with the needs of English-speaking learners in mind, this course will prove invaluable to students at the beginning of their journey and likewise for those who may have a background in learning Arabic.

The course centres on imparting the grammatical and lexical basics, to understand written and spoken texts, to hold conversations, and to translate and write Arabic texts. To achieve these objectives, specific different chosen texts and appropriate exercises will be covered throughout the course.

SUBJECTS

1. ‘Ilm Matn al-Lughat – LexicoLogy

This is one of the most fundamental of the instrumental sciences. It is the study of the meanings of Arabic words and idioms.

2. al-Naḥw & al-Sarf – Grammar & Morphology

These complementary sciences will cover case inflection, declension, conjugation, and derivation.

3. al-Balagha – Rhetoric

This science will highlight the different ways in which the Arabic language is used for emotional and psychological effects.

SKILLS

1. Listening & Speaking

This is essential in assisting with the correct pronunciation of words and Arabic text.

2. Reading

Students will then have the opportunity, after articulating the sounds, words and Arabic text and getting a taste for the lexical items of the language, to read back to the teacher.

3. writing

After having been exposed to the above, students are now in a better position to write Arabic as they have heard, spoken and seen the word, phrase or sentence they are about to write.
