On the birth of a child, the Aqiqah is performed as part of the Sunnah of the Prophet Mohammed (SAW). It involves the sacrifice of livestock with the meat distributed amongst the poor and needy.
"Slaughter two comparable sheep for a male newborn and one sheep for a female." [Tirmidhi]
An Aqiqah for a baby boy involves the sacrifice of 2 animals (such as goat or sheep) and the Aqiqah for a baby girl involves the sacrifice of 1 animal, as per the Sunnah. It is also recommended that a newborns head is shaved, and Sadaqah is given to the value of the weight of the hair in silver (£10 will easily cover the required value, at the current market rate of silver.
